If you like to love people and travel, it’s hard to go past a career in hospitality mnagement. Hospitality management is the academic study of the hospitality industry. A degree in Hospitality management is often conferred from either a university college dedicated to the studies of hospitality management or a business school with a department in hospitality management studies.

Hospitality management has both field of work and field of study. In the reference of work; it refers to management of hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and other institutions in the hospitality industry. As a field of study, it refers to the study of the hospitality industry and its management needs. People who are interested in careers in hospitality management may opt to pursue it as a field of study so that they can start their careers on solid footing. The present hospitality industry is vast and very diverse. Any time people travel, stay in a hotel, eat out, go to the movies, and engage in similar activities, they are patronizing establishments in the hospitality industry. The management of such establishments is very challenging, as managers need to be flexible enough to anticipate and meet a wide variety of needs. They must also handle tasks such as training employees, handling staff, setting standards, and so forth.

Some develop careers in hospitality management by working from the ground up. They get experience in various low level positions before gradually being promoted into supervisory positions, and eventually attain managerial status. For people who plan to work with a single organization for life, this method can be a great way to advance, as it familiarizes them with all of the nuances of the organizations they work for and gives them a better idea of the amount of work involved at all levels to run a facility like a busy resort.

People who attend hospitality management training can opt for certification programs, associate’s degrees, or bachelor’s degrees in hospitality management. Training is designed to prepare people to take on managerial positions immediately, familiarizing people with everything from payment processing systems to what to do when a natural disaster strikes a hotel. People with training can often enter the job market right away and command excellent salaries, especially if they graduate from well known schools. Subject areas include business communication, service management, hospitality operations, facilities management and front office operations.

Hospitality offers a world of opportunities. By 2020 hospitality is predicted to be the world’s biggest industry. Building a successful career in hospitality requires a foundation of knowledge. Most of the hospitality management colleges help students to start a professional career.

Hospitality has the deep relation with the hotel industry. Any changes in trends of hotel business have wide scale implications on an otherwise diverse industry. Emerging concept of hospitality add some more spice with best hotel industry

The hotel industry gives employment at a very large proportion of part time workers, who after gaining substantial experience, leave for other lucrative jobs at restaurants and outdoors. Low wages in the hotel industry is one of the primary reasons for low retention rates.

Hotel industry Gurus are already thinking of ways to attract and retain qualified workers by increasing the pay scales and by reducing the long working hours. The top management is now devising constructive methods that will retain the existing workers by sponsoring education and creating attractive career paths. The rising cost of construction and a struggling real estate has prompted hoteliers to deploy the pre-fabricated and cost effective solution in the construction of new hotels. In fact they are fighting back by producing highly efficient designs that utilize a greater proportion of space for revenue generating purpose. Future trends in the hotel construction will seek to maximize the use of building areas by constructing a multi purpose facility that will include Casinos, shopping outlets and Theatres. The stand alone hotel concept is likely to vanish as the new properties will be constructed as a mixed use development to provide guests with facilities such as Church, Hospitals and Theme Parks. Such a variety will ensure that guests remain at one spot which will help generate revenue for the entire hotel complex.

Hotel Industry in India has witnessed tremendous boom in recent years. Hotel Industry is inextricably linked to the tourism industry and the growth in the Indian tourism industry has fuelled the growth of Indian hotel industry. The thriving economy and increased business opportunities in India have acted as a boon for Indian hotel industry. The arrival of low cost airlines and the associated price wars have given domestic tourists a host of options. The ‘Incredible India’ destination campaign and the recently launched ‘Atithi Devo Bhavah’ (ADB) campaign have also helped in the growth of domestic and international tourism and consequently the hotel industry.

In recent years government has taken several steps to boost travel & tourism which have benefited hotel industry in India. These include the abolishment of the inland air travel tax of 15%; reduction in excise duty on aviation turbine fuel to 8%; and removal of a number of restrictions on outbound chartered flights, including those relating to frequency and size of aircraft. The government’s recent decision to treat convention centres as part of core infrastructure, allowing the government to provide critical funding for the large capital investment that may be required has also fuelled the demand for hotel rooms.

Growth of Indian economy has opened enormous opportunities for different sectors. Hotel Industry is one among these benefecieries. The number of job vacancies in the hospitality industry is many, but employment with top notch companies, such as the Taj group, is not that easy. According to one survey, there will be a 45% increase in the number of five-star hotels in the Capital in the next two years. In other metropolitan cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai and Kolkata, there will be a growth of 25% in the hospitality industry by 2010, added Sharma. And that means a need for skilled employees—and the institutes that train them.

With the Commonwealth Games approaching fast, all sectors within the hospitality, including hotels, are expected to grow. But there are challenges the hotel industry faces, namely, attrition and skilled employees. Many employees, said experts, are leaving hotels for other hospitality sectors that pay more, such as airlines and cruise liners. Some are even going abroad to West Asia and Europe.

According to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, or Assocham, the attrition rate in the hospitality industry is set to double to nearly 50% from the current 25% on account of the Commonwealth Games, which will fuel a huge demand for trained and skilled personnel in the next few years. The chamber estimates that the Commonwealth Games will create job opportunities for approximately 50,000 skilled professionals, and around 70 hotels are likely to be commissioned in the next three years, assuming each hotel will need approximately 600 workers. This huge future demand and future growth prospect gave the motive of hotel management courses in India is to prepare the students to face the challenges of this competitive world.
